Iptacopan is an oral, targeted complement-system inhibitor. It blocks complement factor B, helping control abnormal immune-system activity that contributes to certain blood and kidney disorders.

Iptacopan selectively inhibits the alternative pathway of the complement system. This pathway can contribute to the destruction of red blood cells and damage to kidney filters when it is abnormally activated.

The US-approved indications include paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), primary immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), and complement 3 glomerulopathy (C3G). The standard recommended dose is 200 mg orally twice daily, but treatment must be prescribed for the specific condition and patient.

Iptacopan is approved in the United States for the following conditions in adults:

1. Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH): A rare blood disorder in which red blood cells are vulnerable to complement-mediated destruction.

2. Primary immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN): A kidney disease in which abnormal IgA-related immune activity damages the kidney filters. Iptacopan is indicated to slow kidney function decline in eligible adults at risk of disease progression.

3. Complement 3 glomerulopathy (C3G): A rare kidney disease involving abnormal complement activation; treatment is intended to reduce proteinuria.

Product Information

What is Lucipta Iptacopan 200mg Capsules 60's?

Indications for Lucipta Iptacopan 200mg Capsules 60's

Therapeutic Effects of Lucipta Iptacopan 200mg Capsules 60's

  • In PNH: Reduces complement-mediated red blood cell destruction and may improve haemoglobin levels and reduce the need for blood transfusions.
  • In IgAN: Reduces protein leakage into the urine and, under the current US indication, helps slow kidney function decline in eligible adults.
  • In C3G: Reduces proteinuria by inhibiting abnormal complement pathway activity.

The response differs between patients. Regular blood tests, urine testing, and clinical follow-up are important to assess effectiveness.

How to consume Lucipta Iptacopan 200mg Capsules 60's

  • The recommended labeled dose is 200 mg orally twice daily, with or without food.
  • Swallow capsules whole. Do not open, break, or chew them.
  • If a dose is missed, take one dose as soon as possible, even if it is close to the next scheduled dose, then resume the regular schedule. Do not take extra doses beyond the prescribed regimen.
  • If switching from eculizumab or ravulizumab for PNH, the timing must be carefully managed by the treating specialist to reduce the risk of haemolysis.
  • Do not discontinue treatment without medical advice, especially in PNH, because haemolysis can recur after stopping.

Side Effects of Lucipta Iptacopan 200mg Capsules 60's

Common:

Side effects vary by the condition being treated. Reported effects include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nose and throat)
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Bacterial or viral infections
  • Skin rash
  • Changes in cholesterol or triglyceride levels
  • Dizziness in some patients

Serious:

Serious bacterial infections—boxed warning

Iptacopan increases the risk of severe or life-threatening infections caused by encapsulated bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Haemophilus influenzae type b. Fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, rash, or rapidly worsening illness requires immediate medical assessment.

Haemolysis after stopping treatment

Patients with PNH require close monitoring for at least two weeks after discontinuation because red blood cell destruction may recur.

Increased cholesterol and triglycerides

Blood lipid levels may rise, so periodic testing is recommended.

Severe allergic reaction

Facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, or collapse requires emergency care.

Vaccination against relevant encapsulated bacteria should be completed or updated at least two weeks before treatment when possible. If urgent treatment is necessary, the specialist may arrange antibiotic prophylaxis and vaccination according to the applicable protocol. Vaccination does not eliminate infection risk.

Drug Interactions

Iptacopan can interact with medicines that affect the CYP2C8 enzyme.

  • Rifampicin and other CYP2C8 inducers: May reduce iptacopan exposure and potentially reduce effectiveness.
  • Gemfibrozil and strong CYP2C8 inhibitors: May increase iptacopan exposure; co-administration with strong CYP2C8 inhibitors is not recommended.
  • Other prescription medicines, supplements, and herbal products: Inform the treating doctor and pharmacist before starting any new product.

Do not change treatment or stop another prescribed medicine without medical advice.

Storage & Handling

  • Lucipta is stored at 20°C–25°C, with permitted excursions between 15°C and 30°C.
  • Keep capsules in their original packaging and protect them from moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not use expired or damaged capsules.

Expert Advice

  • Confirm the diagnosis and the indication for iptacopan before treatment.
  • Complete or update the recommended vaccinations before starting treatment whenever feasible.
  • Carry the patient safety information provided with the medicine and seek urgent care if signs of serious infection develop.
  • Monitor blood counts and haemolysis markers in PNH, urine protein and kidney function in kidney diseases, and lipid levels during treatment.
  • Discuss any planned interruption or discontinuation with the treating specialist.
  • Use the medicine only under appropriate specialist supervision and follow local prescribing and dispensing requirements.

Important: Iptacopan is a specialist prescription medicine with a serious infection warning. The patient should receive the appropriate vaccination and infection-prevention counselling before treatment and should not stop the medicine without medical supervision.
