FAST and BE-FAST: public stroke education

FAST means Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency services. BE-FAST adds Balance and Eyes (sudden vision loss or double vision).

Clot-busting medicine and clot retrieval only help some ischaemic strokes and only within tight time windows. Waiting overnight ‘to see if it passes’ is the dangerous option.

A TIA (mini-stroke) can resolve in minutes and still needs urgent medical care the same day — it can be a warning of a larger stroke.
