Why cancer myths spread — and why facts matter

Searches like “is cancer contagious”, “does sugar feed cancer”, and “can a positive attitude cure cancer” are among the most common cancer questions online. Short, shareable quizzes help people remember the facts before rumours reach a newly diagnosed family.

Cancer is a group of diseases in which cells grow out of control. It is not an infection you catch from hugging, sharing food, or caring for someone. A few cancers are linked to viruses such as HPV or hepatitis — that is not the same as “catching cancer” from a patient.

Lifestyle can change risk for some cancers (tobacco, alcohol, excess body weight, UV, certain infections), but no juice, supplement, or mindset replaces evidence-based treatment. Early detection and guideline-based care improve options for many — not all — cancers.

This game covers

Frequently asked questions

No. You cannot catch cancer by touching, kissing, sharing utensils, or caring for someone with cancer. A small number of cancers are linked to viruses (for example HPV and cervical cancer, or hepatitis and some liver cancers), which is different from catching cancer from a patient.
