Colon cancer screening: what the public-health message is
Screening is for people who feel well. Blood in the stool, a lasting change in bowel habit, unexplained anaemia, or pencil-thin stools are symptoms — they need a diagnostic work-up, not ‘wait for my screening year’.
In the United States, the USPSTF recommends offering colorectal screening from age 45 for average-risk adults; other countries still start at 50 or use organised stool-test programmes. Family history or inherited syndromes can mean starting earlier.
FIT (faecal immunochemical test) looks for hidden blood in stool. Colonoscopy can find and remove polyps in the same procedure. Both are valid strategies when used as intended. Neither is a DIY diagnosis.
